'All over the place': Carragher wanted Liverpool star axed at HT v Leeds

A horrendous Joe Gomez mistake set the tone for Liverpool in their visit of Leeds United this evening.

An error-prone Gomez conceded the first goal for Jurgen Klopp’s side as his backpass was pounced on by Rodrigo, who beat Alisson to the ball en route to tapping into an empty net.

This isn’t the first time this season that the 25-year-old has cost Liverpool a goal, having been questionable in the defeat by Nottingham Forest last week.

Gomez was rather suspect for the remainder of the half and Jamie Carragher claims that swapping him for Ibrahima Konate should’ve been considered by the Reds’ manager at the break.

He said on Sky Sports [29/10, 8:33pm]: “Joe Gomez has been all over the place in this first half. He really has. He had a poor first half in Napoli a few weeks ago and Matip came on at half-time. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Konate at half-time either.”

On this occasion, Gomez survived the first half without being substituted and honestly, you have to say that he was much better in the second half.

Liverpool were caught on the counter attack a number of times, but that isn’t on the former Charlton Athletic defender.

Also, Konate is only back from injury so that perhaps played into Klopp’s thinking in being reluctant to substitute him at the break.

Truthfully, Liverpool’s problems run much deeper than just one player.

Klopp’s side wound up losing 2-1 after conceding a last-minute winner to Crysencio Summerville against Leeds and honestly, it isn’t a huge surprise.

For whatever reason, the Reds haven’t been at the races even once this season and it’s starting to cost them – big time.
