Gary Neville asks £220k-a-week player if he regrets joining Liverpool now

Gary Neville asked Virgil van Dijk this week if he at all regrets joining Liverpool. The tongue-in-cheek question got a proper answer.

Gary Neville had Virgil van Dijk on The Overlap Xtra this week, asking the Liverpool defender 19 questions. One for every one of the Reds’ league titles, you see.

One question that popped up was relatively simple – do you have any regrets? Neville then couldn’t resist suggesting ‘joining Liverpool’ as a potential answer.

“That was one of the best decisions ever!” Van Dijk replied. “I don’t have any regrets. No regrets.”

Van Dijk on joining Liverpool

No regrets and why would he?! Van Dijk’s move to Liverpool transformed him from one of the top centre-backs in the Premier League to pretty much undisputedly the best in the world. From a PFA Team of the Season contender to runner-up in the Ballon d’Or.

Van Dijk has won every major trophy – Europa League aside – and picked up the individual awards to go with it. And yet, it perhaps wouldn’t shock anyone to hear of regrets.

For all Liverpool have won, some players may have preferred a different route. There was more money to be had at certain clubs, even if the Reds reportedly pay him £220k per week now.

There’s more guaranteed success elsewhere, too, given Manchester City reportedly wanted Van Dijk. He could have had more league titles that way and it’s hard to imagine they’d have continued to fail in the Champions League if they’d had the Dutchman at the back.

But that route isn’t for everyone. Instead, Van Dijk goes down as one of the greatest and most influential players in Liverpool’s illustrious history. He’ll forever have an integral place in their history, along with some of the best players ever seen in English football.
